our little one is becoming more and more interested in working with her hands...coloring, mixing, cleaning, and playing with playdough!
i made a batch of it several weeks ago and she has played with it several times since. the first time i gave it to her, she stayed busy in her high chair for over an hour!
the recipe i used was:
1 1/2 cups flour
1/3 cup salt
2 teaspoons cream of tartar
1 1/2 tablespoons olive oil
1 1/2 cups water
put the dry ingredients in a pan on the stove, then add the water and oil. if you want to add color to your playdough, add it at this time as well. cook on medium heat and stir until it becomes thick. after a few minutes it will become one big glob of playdough that can't be mixed anymore. take it off the heat, put it on a plate or in a bowl to cool for a bit, and then use your hands to form it into a ball. if it is still sticky at this point, just add a bit more flour. i store ours in a recycled yogurt container and have kept it in the fridge in hopes that it will last longer. i made it at least four weeks ago, though, and it is still soft and use-able. easy, cheap, and natural playdough!
the smell totally brought me back to my own childhood because my mom used to make playdough for us! i'm glad my little girl can have the same experience as she grows up.

visit from family
not much crafting (or even cooking - gasp!) has been happening around here. we've been having lots of fun doing other things! we just dropped two of my sisters off at the airport this morning after their week-long visit with us. it was so much fun to introduce them to california, and it was fun for all of us to spend time with them! unfortunately, they became well-acquainted with the traffic on the california freeways...but i think we showed them a lot of great things about california too!
aunt laura dug a hole on the beach. our little one loved climbing in and out of it!
we went to another aquarium.
the aquarium made aunt evie hungry for seafood...so i got to eat crab for the first time (well...i've had it in crab cakes, but never straight out of the shell). our family of three shared one meal and we all got enough food!
aunt evie shared some corn with our little love.
we did some whale-watching. we saw three whales (including a mother and baby), seals, a lot of dolphins, and a whole bunch of birds. it definitely goes down as one of the highlights of this summer.
we spent an evening on the pier and beach.
our girl loves her daddy. and i love this photo. (except i can see it showing up in her wedding slideshow someday...waahhhh!)
we spent yesterday at the zoo. it was impressive. we rode the aerial tram. she kept saying, "up, up, up!"
a striking resemblance...
and we spent another evening on the beach. our girl walking with {two of} her aunts. she LOVED having them here and cried when we said goodbye to them at the airport. they thoroughly spoiled her.
and...just because i'm proud of this...i totally cheated and made these minion cupcakes for my nephew's birthday on saturday. he loves despicable me, and i knew i had to make these for him. my brother-in-law asked if they were whole-wheat twinkies. ha! they were a big hit and totally worth it. (i got the inspiration here).
my love is at a church meeting tonight. our little love is sleeping. i am enjoying some quiet time alone. i am definitely feeling a tug towards home these days. we will be heading that way in just a little over three weeks (another huge roadtrip!). we are going to soak up all we can here before then.

the coast
we got back yesterday from four full, beautiful days on the coast. we had a great time! here are a few pics from the trip.
big sur. one of our new favorite places in the world.
can you find the waterfall in the photo above?
redwoods
a hike
fisherman's wharf in monterey
a view of alcatraz from pier 39 in san francisco.
the golden gate bridge. we had great view of it all morning, then drove across the bridge and within minutes the bridge was deep inside a cloud.
driving around san francisco.
the santa cruz boardwalk. jeremy and i went for a spin on this coaster.
meeting some otters behind the scenes at the monterey bay aquarium (thanks georgia!)
jellies and sea turtles
cannery row in monterey
and we saw a lot of seals and sea lions lazing around
downtown san francisco.
we ate in several restaurants with great views...eating salmon while watching seals frolic in the water was a highlight, as well as eating clam chowder out of sourdough bread bowls while admiring the golden gate bridge.
we're all extra tired today and recovering from our busy few days of traveling. it was fun to be together, to see so many things i had heard about but never actually seen, and to have new adventures. it was a good one.

this is summer.
we are feeling quite settled in these days. we have developed a routine, we have found the grocery stores where we like to shop, and i am actually able to go on walks without getting lost in our neighborhood. our days have a nice rhythm to them.
we usually wake up around 7 (although our neighbor's barking dog usually wakes us up around 3 am and 6:30 am, and after that it's just dozing until the little one wakes up). after breakfast, jeremy either works at home, the church, or a coffee shop. i clean up the kitchen, do whatever housekeeping tasks need to get done, and then take the little one on a walk. we spend the rest of the morning playing in the backyard and i usually get the opportunity to read a book as the sandbox, kiddie pool, and trucks (left by the previous people who lived here) keep the little one occupied.
we come in for lunch and jeremy joins us, then it's naptime. most days, i take advantage of naptime by doing whatever bills or menu planning i need to get done, and then sitting down with a book. some days you could even catch me sneaking in my own little power nap! jeremy works on his sermons at home in the afternoons. being away from home and most of our belongings has simplified my life in a {mostly} nice way and i am enjoying the slower pace of afternoon reading time. so far, i have read la's orchestra saved the world, prodigal summer, and the bean trees. i just finished the kitchen house. all good reads, in my opinion.
i say that being away from home has mostly simplified my life in a nice way because there are many things i miss from home. sometimes it's just a little thing: my jar of ribbons to make a hair bow for our girl, or a comfy pair of pants i left at home. sometimes it's something bigger like my griddle, when i try to make pancakes on the griddle here and the whole project is a flop. mostly i miss my craft supplies as i am finding a lot of inspiration for crafts and don't have any supplies to make them. i was feeling so desperate for a craft project that when i got the book big little felt universe for my birthday a few weeks ago, i knew i had to get started. it's perfect because i have plans to make a play kitchen for our little one when we get home, and this way i can have food already made to stock it with! i used some of my birthday money to purchase a supply of felt online and am eagerly awaiting it's arrival in the mail.
despite the things (and people) i am missing, i am finding that it is surprisingly easy for me to appreciate this summer for what it is. there are so many things i am enjoying. we are able to drive for 20 minutes and land on the beach of the ocean. the ocean smells so good. even though the days get hot, it cools down wonderfully at night and cool breezes blow in our windows. we are close to family and our little one recognizes and knows the names of each of her cousins, aunts, and uncles. we are experiencing what pastoral ministry looks like for the first time and are finding it challenging and exciting. it is a different, and good, summer.
my favorite time of the day comes after dinner when our little one is clean from her bath and we head out for our nightly walk around the block. we wave at neighbors, look for cats and dogs, and our little love spies every ball and basketball hoop we walk past. the ocean breeze is already cooling the air as our little family of three soaks everything in. this is summer.
