this way-to-keep-a-little-one-occupied-during-travel will be tested on saturday when we fly across the country. we will be spending a little over five hours up in the air. since even waiting in our doctor's office waiting room with our daughter is quite an undertaking, i am a bit anxious about all those hours in an airplane with our very active toddler.
i have been trying to come up with a variety of ways to entertain her during our trip. there will be snacks of course, some little toys and books, a little photo album (which i still need to put together) and some junk mail to open (i've been saving it for a few weeks). now i will be adding what i will call a "busy wallet" to the list of things to do.
this busy wallet is a budget-friendly and easy thing to prepare before traveling. it could also be used for a road trip, or kept in the diaper bag for those times of unexpected waiting with an antsy little one.
to make your own busy wallet you need...a wallet, some paper or other material, and anything else you want to add (a pen, stickers, paper, maybe some coins for an older child).
i didn't have an unused wallet laying around, so i purchased a wallet at a local thrift store for $1.99 (i thought this was a little pricey). i made sure to choose one that had a lot of pockets, pouches, and a zipper and snap.
i used one of the cards from my wallet to cut thick scrapbook papers to the size of cards. some of the papers have designs on them and some are solid colors with sparkles. i had a few sheets of shiny paper that is sticky on one side, so i stuck that on the back of the scrapbook papers to make it more interesting and fun. you could also include those fake credit cards that come in the mail, photos cut to size, or anything else that fits in the little pockets.
i added a pen to the wallet (our girl loves holding onto pens). and in the pocket for dollar bills, i put some larger pieces of paper.
this wallet has a zippered back pocket, so i filled it with stickers. our child is a bit too young to know how to put stickers onto paper, but she is fascinated by how they stick to her fingers. for an older child, i think it would be a fun idea to include letter or number stickers that can be stuck to the "cards" or papers in the wallet and can also be used as a learning tool.
let's hope this wallet keeps our girl busy for a good chunk of flying time! i will definitely report on how this worked for us after we test it out on our travels. i would love to know if you put one of these together and how it works for your child.
So how did it work?
ReplyDeletethe wallet worked great! we used it on the plane, but also on our recent road trips, and it has kept the little one occupied for up to half an hour sometimes! she really enjoyed taking all the "cards" out of the pockets and zipping and unzipping the back pocket. i definitely recommend getting a wallet that has as many pockets/snaps/zippers as possible. i call this a success!
ReplyDeleteI love this idea! Thanks for sharing. (I found you through pinterest.)

ReplyDeleteI love this idea and can't wait to try it!
ReplyDeletemy son is allllways trying stealing my wallet and taking everything out putting it back etc. so this is a great idea, he loves it!!
ReplyDeleteWill definitely be giving this a go soon! :) Thanks for the great idea! Will link back here when we make ours.. I've pinned this on PInterest!
ReplyDeleteI actually used to have a busy wallet when I was little (I am now 30) and I thought it was cool that you did this for your little girl. I personally loved mine :)
ReplyDeleteI will definitely be trying this one! I currently let my 18 month old play with my purse to keep him busy. No matter how many toys I bring, emptying my purse is always more fun! lol Thanks for the great idea!
ReplyDelete(found through Pinterest) :)
We did the same thing for Christmas one year. Another great thing to add is used gift cards (that have a zero balance). They're the perfect size and usually bright and fun.
ReplyDeleteAwesome idea!
ReplyDeleteVery clever! I love this idea.
ReplyDeleteI would love to reprint this on my blog! Can you email me at bonnie@thejoyfulorganizer.com if you approve? Thank you!
ReplyDeleteFound this on Pinterest. Just bought a wallet today at a store that was going out of business so scored it for $1! Can't wait to fill with stuff for my son to put in his "diaper bag"!
ReplyDeleteOh, I love this activity. I bought an old wallet from a local consignment and executed this past weekend on a road trip. It worked so well!! Thank you!!
ReplyDeleteGonna do this for my grand kids. Yes, I can see this working well with each one in thier own way. I am excited to have a new idea that stores nice and compactly.
ReplyDeleteWhy didn't I think of this? It's brilliant! My two-and-a-half year old loves to take all the cards out of my wallet. It drives me crazy because I'm always having to put them back in or worry about him losing one. This will definitely be added to my arsenal soon. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteYou could also print off small family pix for them to sort/ identify, etc
ReplyDeleteplastic coins or paper coins, I could see even making stickers of their own photo so they can make their own ID on the fake cards. oh oh and if you get one with a thingy (yes, it is a technical term in my world) you could attach play keys and or a play cell phone too! Keep it all together... hmmmmm my creativity is kicking in!
ReplyDeleteGreat idea, maybe my kids will actually stop trying to steal my wallet!
ReplyDeleteHi everybody . I'm surprised to read this because i had this idea some months before and i had to add that i also took an old bag (tired that my little girl take mine ) and filled it with lots of similar things like mirror, creams packaging , mini bags with more things inside , etc etc everything that she 's used to find in mine bag . It is incredible how many time she spend discovering things !!!!! Great great idea !!!
ReplyDeleteQuick addition to an already great idea. If you get a wallet with a pocket for a checkbook you could also add a small spiral bound pad of paper. Great for those toddlers who are starting to enjoy using the writing utensils.
ReplyDeleteI made my 2 girls their's today. Went to Goodwill, got good wallets full of pockets, zipper compartments, places for your driver's license and other "windows" inside.I cleaned them up with laundry spray stain pre treat and a tooth brush, wet wash cloth.
ReplyDeleteMy 5 yr. old daughter will be using this when she goes to school on the bus and on her way home for something to occupy her. She's really into artwork. I cut many pieces of colored paper and white paper (size of credit cards) put them in the slots like you did. Put real looking fake money in the zipper area because they are learning all about money in school right now. I filled a spot w/ all kinds of stickers (cut up sheets of them) Put her class portrait in there to show that it is her's. With different colored index cards, I cut them into credit card size. 1 card I wrote her address, another one has our phone numbers, the other 4 have all of her sight words listed (in the "windows") for her to practice from each quarter of the year. I also stuck a family portrait in there, a Tinkerbell eraser, & pretty pencil. You can really tailor your wallet for your particular child.
My 3 year old's wallet has ABC's in it, colors and shapes, and all the rest my other daughter's has minus the words and such. We got flash cards from a dollar store the size of a deck of cards perfect for this wallet!
My kids are in love and very protective over them. They feel very special. This will be great on our 2 1/2 hr. car ride this weekend!
Thanks for stirring up some creativity for me!
fabulous idea!!!
ReplyDeleteGreat idea! We have a flight to Hawaii soon. I'm thinking I will pack a few of these! Thanks for the idea!

I love your post on busy bags, I have made a bunch for my own kids and they are addicted! I did a roundup of bags we have made on my blog and linked to your tutorial, you can check it out here: http://babesindeutschland.com/ Thanks for the inspiration!
ReplyDeleteI also took the makeup out of various compacts and my daughter loved opening closing and looking at herself in the little mirrors---just like mommy.
ReplyDeleteI will be putting one of these together to carry in my purse. I think it will be great for church!
